Agartala, July 22 (IANS) The Tripura assembly Friday finally got its permanent home after 60 years of existence in various forms.
The assembly has been shifted to the newly built complex on the capital’s outskirts, away from its present home in the century-old royal palace.
The new building, eight kilometes north of Agartala, was to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but he cancelled his trip. Tripura Governor D.Y. Patil did the honours.
Patil, accompanied by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Friday evening inaugurated the sprawling three-storey assembly building built at a cost of Rs.30 crore. It is earthquake proof.
Speaking at the event, Sarkar said: “Once people became frightened after hearing the name of terrorism-hit Tripura. Now it is a model state due to its achievements.”
Tripura would soon get a permanent high court, he added.
The Ujjayanta Palace, which until now housed the assembly, was constructed by then Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya Bahadur in 1899-1901.
The building was the seat of the erstwhile princely rulers. It will now become a museum.
