Trinidad and Tobago to host next commonwealth speakers meet

Meira Kumar New Delhi, Jan 15 (IANS) The 21st Commonwealth presiding officers conference will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in 2012, an official release said Saturday. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over a meeting of the standing committee of Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference (CSPOC) at the Isle of Man Thursday where the Caribbean nation was chosen as the next venue, the release said.

“The committee deliberated upon the offers from Pakistan and Trinidad and Tobago to host the conference in 2012. Since there was no consensus, voting was called for. In the voting, it was decided that Trinidad and Tobago may host the 21st CSPOC in January 2012,” the release said.

Meira Kumar presided over the standing committee in her capacity as the immediate past president.

The release said the committee selected four subjects, three of which were suggested by India, for the 2012 conference.

Nine presiding officers of Commonwealth countries along with the hosts attended the meeting.
