Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, April 4 (IANS) A Trinamool Congress worker was beaten up and later crushed under a car driven by coal mafia leader in West Bengal’s Burdwan district Monday, police said.

Party leaders alleged the mafia leader was affiliated with the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) but police did not confirm it.

“Kabir Quazi was beaten up when he tried to save his party candidate from Jamuria assembly constituency Prabhat Chatterjee from the hands of assailants this afternoon. Later, he was run over by a vehicle allegedly driven by local coal mafia leader Dinabandhu Barui,” said Burdwan Police Superintendent Humayan Kabir.

“Following the incident, the local Trinamool Congress supporters surrounded the Jamuria police station demanding arrest of the assailants. A huge contingent of police had been rushed to the spot and raids were conducted in the area. So far, four people have been arrested,” Kabir told IANS over phone.

According to reports, Chatterjee was campaigning in the area when a gang led by Barui, allegedly backed by the CPI-M, attacked him. Quazi, a local Trinamool leader, intervened but was himself beaten up. Later when they were returning from the area, it was Barui who hit Kabir with his speeding car and fled from the spot.

Kabir was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead while Chatterjee was admitted in the hospital in a critical condition.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy said: “This is an organised attack on our candidate. Barui is a CPI-M goon and a coal mafia in the area. He was sent by the senior CPI-M leaders to attack our candidate. We will inform the Election Commission about the incident.”

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee will go to Jamuria and hold a protest rally in the area Tuesday.

Asked about Barui’s political affiliation, Kabir said: “We are not aware about his political links. He was coal mafia and was arrested earlier.”

CPI-M district committee secretary Amal Halder also ruled out any involvement of his party cadres in the crime.
