Kolkata, Nov 27 (IANS) A Trinamool Congress team visited West Bengal’s Hooghly district Friday, a day after one person was killed and six injured in clashes between activists of the opposition party and the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The team, led by union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy, spoke to Trinamool Congress workers in the three troubled villages - Majhpur, Bardighrui and Chandrabhan - and took stock of the situation.
Partha Chattopadhyay, leader of opposition in the state assembly, was also part of the delegation.
They garlanded the body of Ananta Dolui, who died in the clashes, and met his family.
Before leaving Kolkata, Chattopadhyay told IANS: “We will visit all three violence-hit villages. We’ll talk to our party workers who were attacked by CPI-M-backed goons last morning.”
“We’ll give a report to our party chief Mamata Banerjee about the situation there on our return.”
Dolui was killed and six people, including policemen, were injured as activists of the CPI-M and the Trinamool Congress clashed in the three villages Thursday morning.
When a large police team reached the spot it was met with a hail of bullets, one of which hit Khanakul police station officer-in-charge Sukomal Das. Later, Das was taken to a Kolkata hospital for medical treatment.
According to sources, several police pickets have been erected in the region to avert further violence.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has instructed the district administration to take strong and effective action against the offenders.
