Kolkata, May 17 (IANS) At least one person, identified as a Trinamool Congress supporter, was killed and several others injured in post-poll clashes that broke out between rival political parties across West Bengal Tuesday. A huge cache of arms was also seized but no arrest was made, police said.

“A body with sharp cuts was recovered Tuesday near Kamarhati area of North 24-Parganas. It was later identified to be that of S. Iqbal, a Trinamool Congress supporter,” said North 24-Parganas Police Superintendent S.M. Mirza.

Trinamool Congress leaders alleged that Iqbal was killed by the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) cadres as he took active part in the assembly election campaign, said Mirza.

In West Midnapore district, a huge cache of arms and ammunitions was recovered from several parts of the districts.

“In Salboni area, 14 rifles were recovered,” said Deputy Police Superintendent Aneesh Sarkar.

“We have been informed that around a 100 firearms and other weapons were recovered from Goaltore, Keshpur, Anandapur, Salboni and others parts of the district,” said Sarkar.

“In most cases the villagers are informing the police about the recovery of arms and ammunition, and also handing over some people. During raids, firearms were also recovered from their houses,” said Jhargram Superintendent of Police Praveen Tripathi.

The raids are being conducted jointly by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police personnel, Tripathi told IANS over phone.

At least 17 firearms were also recovered from Kotulpur area in Bankura district, said Bankura Police Superintendent Pranav Kumar.

In Arambagh area of Hooghly districts, there was a political clash resulting in injury to several activists, Hooghly Superintendent of Police T. Roy Chowdhury told IANS.

In Blockpara of Arambagh, 21 Trinamool Congress activists were severely beaten up by CPI-M cadres, alleged Trinamool leader Tapan Dasgupta.
