Trinamool decimates Left in industrial belts
June 2nd, 2010 - 6:56 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, June 2 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress juggernaut steamrolled all opposition in Kolkata and the adjoining industrial belts in North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts as it routed the Left in municipal polls.
Apart from its thumping win in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the Trinamool also snatched victory in Khardah, Baranagar, Naihati, Barrackpore and Bhatpara municipalities in North 24 Parganas district.
This region is known for its jute industry and engineering works. The party also bagged the Barasat and Gobardanga civic bodies.
In Hooghly, the party won Tarakeshwar, Konnagar, Uttarpara-Kotrang, Chinsurah and Bansberia municipalities.
The Trinamool success story continued in Nadia district where it claimed the industrial and university town of Kalyani and the weavers’ belt of Shantipur. Kalyani is about 50 km from Kolkata.
The Left Front got a consolation win in Bally of Howrah district in the civic polls held Sunday.
The Trinamool also made inroads in Burdwan district snatching the Memari municipality, considered a Left bastion.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the Trinamool had come up with a great show in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Nadia districts.
