Trains stopped in Bihar to enforce shutdown
July 10th, 2010 - 12:04 pm ICT by IANSPatna, July 10 (IANS) Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) workers Saturday halted trains and blocked roads in several places across Bihar to enforce their statewide shutdown to protest the fuel price hike and rising prices.
Police said several long distance trains were stopped and roads blocked. Buses, trucks and other vehicles kept off the roads.
Supporters and workers of the RJD and LJP halted over a dozen long-route trains at Patna, Gaya, Jehanabad, Bhagalpur and Darbhanga railway stations.
In Patna schools were closed.
“The state administration has made elaborate security arrangements in view of the shutdown,” Additional Director General of Police P.K. Thakur said.
The central government ended curbs on petroleum pricing and hiked the prices of diesel, kerosene and cooking gas last month.
The price of diesel went up by Rs.2 a litre, kerosene by Rs.3 a litre, petrol by Rs.3.50 a litre, and cooking gas by Rs.35 per cylinder.
