Trains starting from Jammu cancelledAugust 5th, 2008 - 9:34 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) The Northern Railways Tuesday cancelled trains starting from Jammu Tawi and Udhampur as a precautionary measure following violent agitations in the Jammu region. The move comes as protesters Tuesday uprooted a portion of the rail track to Jammu with the Amarnath land row agitation continuing after more than a month.
Train no. 0414 Jammu Tawi-Varanasi Special, 8102 Jammu Tawi-Tatanagar Muri Express, 2414 Jammu Tawi-Ajmer Pooja Express, and 4610 Jammu Tawi-Rishikesh Express scheduled to depart Jammu Tawi were cancelled, a railway official said here.
The 4034 Udhampur-Delhi Mail and 2446 Udhampur-New Delhi Uttar Sampark Kranti Express scheduled to depart Udhampur were also cancelled.
“Trains starting from Jammu and Udhampur have been cancelled and short-terminated only for today. There are reports of railway tracks being damaged. As soon as they are cleared, the train movement will start again,” the official added.
Trains going to Jammu have not been cancelled. “However, till which station the trains will go depends on the condition of the tracks. As soon as the damaged track is repaired, the rail traffic would become normal,” the official said.
The 2919 Indore-Jammu Tawi Malwa Express was terminated at Chakki Bank and will originate as 2920 Malwa Express from there at 1.45 p.m. Wednesday.
The 9223 Ahmedabad-Jammu Tawi Express was terminated at Pathankot and was to start return journey from Pathankot at 11.50 p.m. Tuesday.
Railway authorities hoped the track would be repaired by Wednesday morning after which the normal traffic will resume.
