Tibetan government-in-exile launches cable network
November 4th, 2009 - 8:48 pm ICT by IANSDharamsala, Nov 4 (IANS) The Tibetan government-in-exile Wednesday launched a cable network in this town to highlight its policies among the exiled community.
Thubten Samphel, a spokesperson for the government-in-exile that is not recognised by any country, told IANS that “Prime Minister” Samdhong Rinpoche launched the network, Tibet TV.
“This is the first non-commercial initiative of the government-in-exile to highlight its policies among the exiles, especially the youth,” he said.
The channel will showcase various aspects of Tibet’s culture, language, religion and history.
“It will also broadcast live telecast of the sessions of the Tibetan parliament in exile, besides discourses of the Dalai Lama, prayer sessions and documentaries on Tibet,” Samphel said.
Dharamsala is the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile, where the Dalai Lama settled down along with thousands of his followers after fleeing Tibet in 1959.
Dharamsala is now an attraction for Westerners in search of Tibetan culture and spiritual sustenance. India is home to over 100,000 Tibetans.
