Raipur, Dec 9 (IANS) Thousands of activists of Chhattisgarh’s main opposition Congress courted arrest across the state Friday charging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing to keep its promise to farmers.
Congress workers staged demonstration in all the 90 assembly seats and then courted arrest as part of the party’s daylong `jail bharo adndolan’.
About 6,000 Congress workers courted arrest in state capital Raipur while some 5,000 activists at state’s second most populous town Bilaspur where state party president Nandkumar Patel led the agitation.
The BJP is in power since December 2003 and the Congress alleges the BJP has not fulfilled its key promise of paying Rs.270 per quintal as bonus amount to farmers on paddy procurement.
