Agartala, Aug 19 (IANS) Over 7,000 Congress activists were arrested in Tripura Friday for participating in a civil disobedience stir in support of their 25-point demands, including curbing corruption.

“Over 7,000 Congress men were arrested for taking part in a civil disobedience movement,” police spokesman Nepal Das told reporters.

The Congress activists held a symbolic “breaking the rules and police barricade fight”. However, no untoward incident was reported as huge contingents of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and Tripura State Rifles and police troopers were deployed in the capital city.

Water cannons were kept on standby to deal with any eventuality.

Besides weeding out alleged corruption and irregularities in Left-ruled Tripura, the Congress’s 25-point demands include tackling rising crime against women, employment for the youth, smooth supply of fertilisers and pesticides to farmers and expansion of irrigation facilities.

Former minister and senior Congress leaders Birjit Sinha, who led Friday’s stir, said: “If the Left Front government does not take adequate steps to fulfil our demands, a bigger movement would be launched against the state government.”
