Third phase of Jharkhand panchayat polls Monday
December 12th, 2010 - 10:52 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Dec 12 (IANS) The third phase of Jharkhand’s maiden panchayat polls covering more than 32 lakh voters in 20 districts will be conducted Monday, an official said.More than 700 companies of paramilitary and state police personnel will be deployed, a police officer told IANS.
“Three helicopters will also be used for surveillance in Maoist infested areas,” he added.
The polling will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. A total of 990 panchayats, spread over 61 blocks in 20 districts, will be covered.
More than 32 lakh voters will decide fate of over 45,000 candidates in the fray.
The five-phase panchayat elections began Nov 27.
The last panchayat polls were held in 1979 when the areas that make up Jharkhand were a part of Bihar. Even though the state was carved from Bihar Nov 15, 2000, panchayat polls were delayed due to a legal battle over reservations for tribals.
