Hyderabad, Dec 23 (IANS) Tension prevailed in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal town Wednesday as pro-Telangana students clashed with the police and laid siege to the offices of the Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Raising slogans of “Jai Telangana”, students of Kakatiya University clashed with police deployed on the university campus. They demanded that all the legislators irrespective of their political affiliations resign.
They then went on to lay siege to the Congress and TDP offices amid rumours that the central government may backtrack on its commitment to accord separate statehood to Telangana region.
Policemen were also deployed in large numbers at Osmania University, which was the nerve centre of the 11-day pro-Telangana agitation last month. Security has also been tightened at other universities in the region
Chief Minister K. Rosaiah held a meeting with his cabinet colleagues and top police officials to review the situation. He directed the police to be on alert and maintain law and order in view of threats by some parties to launch largescale agitations if the government backtracked.
An alert was also sounded in Hyderabad, which is the bone of contention between Telangana and the two other regions opposing the bifurcation.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao told reporters that the police would act against those making provocative statements.
His reaction came after veteran actor Mohan Babu and TDP leader Srinivas Yadav demanded that the government act against Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhara Rao, who has threatened to “teach a lesson” to those opposing Telangana state or demanding union territory status to Hyderabad.
