Hyderabad, Dec 18 (IANS) Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur town Friday arrested three opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislators and took them to hospital as their condition deteriorated on the fifth day of their “fast unto death” to oppose the proposed division of the state.
Tension prevailed in the town as their followers tried to prevent the arrest and clashed with police. Some TDP workers were injured when police used mild force to control the situation.
TDP legislators Paritala Sunita, P. Raghunath Reddy and Parthasarthi were on “fast unto death” opposing the centre’s decision to initiate the process for separate statehood to Telangana region.
Meanwhile, the “United Andhra” agitation took a violent turn in Anantapur when protestors set afire a “kalyana mandapam” (marriage hall) of the railways.
Police also arrested former Congress legislator Vardarajula Reddy in Porduttur in Kadapa district as his condition started deteriorating on the fourth day of his indefinite hunger strike.
