Chennai, May 20 (IANS) Tamil Nadu minister A.A. Poongothai’s resignation has been accepted by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala Tuesday. Poongothai’s social welfare portfolio has been allotted to P. Geetha Jeevan, another woman ministerm, a Raj Bhavan release said.
Poongothai submitted her resignation to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi May 14 following an expose of an alleged telephone conversation between her and a senior police official during which she reportedly sought favour for a relative.
Karunanidhi said the same day that “an appropriate decision would be taken later on the unfortunate development”.
Poongothai, however, denied wrong-doing and claimed it was “a routine official conversation”.
Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy had played the tapes of the alleged telephonic talks during an interaction with the press May 13.
