Take Somnath back into the party, says senior CPI-M leaderJanuary 13th, 2009 - 8:16 pm ICT by IANS
Kolkata, Jan 13 (IANS) Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and West Bengal Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty has written to party state secretary Biman Bose asking that Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee be reinstated into the party. “I’ve already written a letter to Biman Bose since he is the instrumental head of the party in West Bengal. And I think that the CPI-M state committee will take up this issue in the central committee,” Chakraborty told reporters here Tuesday.
He said the decision to take Chatterjee back into the party would not depend on the opinion of any particular individual.
“We also have some restrictions in the party but I’ll put up the issue whenever it’s required,” the minister said.
The CPI-M had expelled Chatterjee from the party in July 23 last year following the trust vote in parliament. The CPI-M leadership said the action was taken under Article 19 (13) of the party constitution as Chatterjee did not quit the speaker’s post during the trust vote in parliament after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) went ahead with the India-US civil nuclear deal — prompting the Left to withdraw support to the government.
