Suu Kyi’s party not to take part in Myanmar polls
March 29th, 2010 - 9:14 pm ICT by IANSYangon (Myanmar), March 29 (IANS) Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party decided Monday not to take part in the government-sponsored multi-party general election planned for this year, the party spokesman said.
With its leader Suu Kyi, 64, still under 18-month house arrest, the NLD made the decision at a special meeting held at its headquarters in Yangon, said party spokesman U Nyan Win, Xinhua reported.
He added that the government’s electoral laws were “unjust” and “one- sided”.
The meeting also demanded the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and a dozen of its other members as well as other “political prisoners” in the country.
The Myanmar government announced a seven-step roadmap in August 2003 which includes the re-convening of the national convention, drafting of a new state constitution, holding of a national referendum on drafted constitution, sponsoring the general election and formation of a new civilian government.
