New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) With the process of forming Telangana mired in controversy and demands from different parts of the country for new states, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is part of India’s ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition, Saturday said the government should have set up States Reorganisation Commission to deal with the issue.
“The government should have set up States Reorganisation Commission and given it one year to make its recommendations,” NCP spokesman D.P. Tripathi told IANS.
He said that all demands for new states could have been raised before the commission.
Answering queries, Tripathi said the government did not consult his party before initiating the process for creating Telangana. He, however, added that NCP, whcih is a coalition partner in Maharashtra’s Congress led government, supported the demand for Telangana.
On the demand for creating a separate state of Vidarbha from Maharashtra, Tripathi said the party was not against it if there was a consensus. He added that the party was in favour of smaller states.
