Sri Lankan held in Malaysian Indian legislator’s murder probe
July 24th, 2009 - 5:03 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kuala Lumpur, July 24 (IANS) A Sri Lankan man has been detained in connection with the murder of S. Krishnaswamy, an ethnic Indian legislator who was gunned down last year.
Mohammad Razue, 39, is currently under police custody after he was detained two days ago, Star Online reported Friday.
In a statement Friday, Johor police chief Mohammed Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said that information from the public led to the arrest of the suspect.
A prominent leader of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), 61-year-old Krishnaswamy was killed Jan 11 last year, two months before Malaysia went to the polls.
MIC is the oldest party that speaks for Malaysia’s two million-plus Ethnic Indians, most of whom settled here during the British era.
Krishnaswamy was found shot dead in an elevator at the Johor state’s MIC building in Johor Baru.
The state MIC deputy chief had sustained a gunshot wound beneath his left eyebrow, Bernama, the official news agency reported.
A man was spotted escaping from the scene on a motorcycle soon after the body was found in the elevator.
Johor state police have so far detained 13 people and recorded 51 statements in their bid to solve the murder.
Krishnaswamy was a prominent state leader of MIC that is part of the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional.
