Special voter registration camp in Lucknow, other cities
October 25th, 2011 - 11:36 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 25 (IANS) With assembly polls just a few months away, the Uttar Pradesh Election Commission is all set to undertake a special voter registration drive in Lucknow Oct 29. Similar camps are being planned in other major cities of the state, an official said Monday.
“We are organizing a special voter registration mela, not only to facilitate easy enrolment of voters but to also demonstrate to people how to locate their names in the voters list and to use the electronic voting machine,” state chief election officer Umesh Sinha told a press conference here Tuesday.
“We have already added about 50,000 new voters over the past few months in Lucknow, and are now expecting at least another 25,000 to come forward during the enrolment mela,” he said.
“The mela will facilitate enrolment of anyone from any part of the state capital,” he added.
Sinha proposed to hold similar camps in other major cities of the state to help those who were still left out of the voters’ list.
The camp will also provide facility for instant issue of new voter cards to those whose cards are damaged or worn-out for a nominal fee of Rs.10.
Special counters would be put up to cater to physically challenged people, whose cards would be issued on priority.
