Speaker’s decision unfortunate: BJP

Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, July 28 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday termed as “unfortunate” Speaker Meira Kumar’s decision against allowing an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on the price rise, saying the verdict will cause disappointment to the common man.
“This is an unfortunate decision. The common man was hoping that he will get some relief (from the price rise). This decision will cause him a setback and is a disappointment,” senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde told reporters here.

He said the opposition will remain united on the issue and again raise it in the house Thursday.

“The opposition will be united on the issue tomorrow. We will target the government. We will decide our strategy tomorrow,” he said.

Asked about the options before the party and opposition after rejection of adjournment motion notices, Munde said the strategy will be decided Thursday morning.

“We will stay united and raise the issue aggressively,” he said.

Munde said it would have been proper if the government had agreed to the Opposition demand for an adjournment motion on the price rise.

He said that the entire opposition was united on the issue and even the Trinamool Congress, an ally of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), had given notice for a debate on the price rise under Rule 193 as a short duration discussion.

He said National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders had met after the speaker’s decision and decided to continue to build pressure on the government on the price rise.

“We will raise the issue again. We have not left it,” he said, adding that the BJP will move in a concerted manner on the issue along with other opposition parties.

Another BJP leader said that the party was likely to continue insisting on a discussion on price rise under rules which entail voting. He said the adjournment motion notice had been rejected but there were other rules under which a demand can be made for discussion and voting.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Wednesday disallowed an adjournment motion on the price rise, rejecting a demand by a united opposition that was seeking a debate on the issue, followed by a vote to “censure” the government.
