New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) Speaker Meira Kumar Friday slammed the unruly behaviour of “certain sections” in the Lok Sabha before adjourning the winter session of the house sine die amidst uproar over the Telangana state issue.
The speaker asked MPs to make an “honest introspection” about the “disturbing trend” in the functioning of the house.

“It is disturbing to note that a thinking is growing among certain sections in the house that the house should be paralyzed in order to make a political point,” she said in the Lok Sabha.

The third session of 15th Lok Sabha commenced Nov 19 and had 21 sittings spread over 105 hours.

In this session, the house also lost 31 hours and 49 minutes due to interruptions and forced adjournments.

“The house is the symbol of the dreams of over one billion people of this country,” the speaker said reminding the MPs the “solemn oath” they have taken that they would faithfully discharge their duties.

“This is a tragic development which can emasculate this house and render the democratic process ineffective and irrelevant,” Meira Kumar said, urging the MPs to “make individual and collective efforts” to re-establish its “great and hallowed traditions of enlightened debates and discussions”.

There was continuous uproar in the Lok Sabha Friday over the proposal for the formation of a separate Telangana state. The speaker’s directives had little effect on the MPs and she finally declared the house adjourned sine die - indefinitely - at 12.20 p.m.

Referring to the chaos in the Lok Sabha over Telangana, the speaker said: “Ours is a democratic society which, I am sure, can find solutions to the most intractable problems.”

“The maturity and sagacity found in the democratic political forces should help them discover rational approaches to solving this problem,” said Meira Kumar, the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha.

She also expressed hope that “such approaches and attitudes will re-emerge in the coming days and the democratic spirit of inclusiveness will reassert itself in the state of Andhra Pradesh.”
