slave-grab-pic Sep 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The president of the South Carolina senate says that a photograph he took while wearing a military uniform used around the time of the US Civil War in the middle of two black men was nothing more than just a joke.

Glenn McConnell took the picture when he attended a Charleston summit for Republican women in the previous week and since then the picture is rapidly going viral online. Critics believe the picture reminds the dehumanizing past of African Americans during the slave era and shouldn’t have been taken.

McConnell who represents Charleston on a Republican ticket is arguably the most influential politician in South Carolina and he doubles as the head of the Senate Judicial Committee, which is very powerful.

He’s never hidden his conviction that the US Civil War was necessary in unifying the country and he’s gained lots of friends and enemies for his support for the renovation of the Confederate Hunley submarine.

McConnell stated that the picture wasn’t meant to disrespect anyone, as it was just a couple of friends having fun and meant to commend South Carolina for its improvement on racial discrimination. He said that, “It was a friendly photograph. It’s a great statement as to how far this state has come.”
