Chandigarh, Jan 23 (IANS) Newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal joined his office at the Punjab secretariat here Friday.Sukhbir was sworn in as the deputy chief minister Wednesday in the government headed by his father, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Claiming that he had a “positive agenda” in mind to take Punjab forward, Sukhbir said the Akali Dal government was aware of the rampant corruption in the system.

“I am not saying that I can root out corruption completely. We cannot say that we (Akalis) have come and corruption will end. But we will try to curb it in areas where public has a dealing. If I can finish corruption, I should get the Nobel prize for this,” Sukhbir told the media.

“Earlier my role was advisory to the (Badal) government. Now I have responsibility and I can also implement our agenda for the common man. But I cannot change things overnight. Please give us time,” Sukhbir, who is the Akali Dal president, said.

Badal junior blamed the previous Congress government in the state for most ills, including corruption and power cuts in all sectors.

Pressed further by the media to detail his move against corruption, Sukhbir hastily ended the press conference saying: “I am not the chief minister. Moreover, I cannot say all the things today itself.”
