Somnath in Hyderabad for eye check-up

July 17th, 2008 - 1:03 am ICT by IANS -

Hyderabad, July 16 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee arrived here Wednesday night for an eye check-up at a city hospital. Chatterjee, who arrived from Delhi, headed straight to the Raj Bhavan from the airport. He refused to speak to mediapersons.

After a night halt at the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the state governor, the Lok Sabha speaker will visit the L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital Thursday for the check-up. He underwent an eye surgery at the hospital last month.

Andhra Pradesh assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy called on Chatterjee at the Raj Bhavan.

Chatterjee, who is under pressure from his Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) to quit as Lok Sabha speaker before the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government seeks trust vote in parliament July 22, told the television channel Times Now on board the flight to Hyderabad that he would take a decision on the same day.

Chatterjee, who earlier refused to step down, said there was unnecessary speculation in the media about him.

“It is a million dollar question… you keep on speculating,” he said when asked whether or not he would give up the chair.

Earlier in the day he told reporters in Delhi that he was still the speaker.

The withdrawal of support by the Left parties has reduced the Congress-led coalition to a minority and with every vote being important, the CPI-M wants him to quit. However, the party’s official line is that it was for Chatterjee to decide whether to resign or not.
