New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) The central government Thursday accepted the resignation of Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium, who was upset after Communications Minister Kapil Sibal substituted him with another counsel in the 2G scam case, official sources said.

The second top-most law officer of the country had offered to resign Saturday after being substituted by senior counsel Rohinton Nariman in the case.

He told reporters Sunday that he had quit to protect the “dignity of the office”. “I feel it was unfair,” Subramanium said about the appointment of Nariman by Sibal.

Subramanium was conveyed about the acceptance of his resignation late in the evening, sources said.

However, his office staff said that they were not aware of the details of the government’s communication, accepting his resignation.

“No comment,” Subramanium told reporters after he was communicated the acceptance of his resignation.

Subramanium was conveyed the acceptance of his resignation by the prime minister’s office (PMO). He sent his resignation to the prime minister’s office Saturday.

In the last four days, Subramanium stayed away from the apex court saying that he would take his next step only after hearing from the prime minister on his resignation.

As a consequence, a Supreme Court hearing by the special bench headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia on infrastructure of subordinate courts was adjourned Monday.

Soon after quitting, Subramanium was asked by the PMO and also former union law minister M. Veerappa Moily not to persist with his resignation and wait.
