Sikkim quake-affected kids meet Dikshit
January 28th, 2012 - 7:16 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 28 (IANS) A group of 20 school kids from the September 2011 earthquake-affected areas of Sikkim Saturday met Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here as part of an educational trip organised by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
The seven boys and 13 girls from schools in Chungthang and Rabong are also visiting Agra apart from Delhi Jan 20-31.
“I am sure that these students will gain valuable experience by seeing the historical monuments, discovering the values of unity in diversity and communal harmony,” Dikshit said.
“Delhi is yours. When your next group will come, I will host them,” she added.
As per ITBP, such trips will be organised in future as well.
“This excursion will not only soothe the psychological wounds inflicted by the ravaging earthquake on their young minds, it will also somewhat minimize the loss of their near and dear ones,” ITBP’s PRO Deepak Pandey said.
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Sikkim in September last year claimed at least 78 lives in the state. ITBP played a vital role in the search and rescue operation.
A mountain trained force, the ITBP is deployed on border outposts from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Diphu La in Arunachal Pradesh manning on altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,500 feet in the western, central and eastern sectors of the India-China border.
