Senator Jon Kyl to retire
February 11th, 2011 - 2:17 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattArizona, Feb 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Arizona Republican Jon Kyl announced during a press conference on Thursday that he would not be seeking reelection upon the expiry of his current term in 2012.
Kyl is currently the second ranking Republican in the Senate and he says he wouldn’t be seeking to go back to office for the fourth time. He has held onto his seat since 1994.
The 68-year-old believes that he has to handle other challenges. He told reporters that, “There is no other reason than the fact it is time. It is time for me to do something else and time to give someone else a chance.”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell described the intended departure of Kyl as a big loss to the country. During an interview at the annual gathering of the GOP activists called the Conservative Political Action Conference, McConnell said that he is however happy that Kyl will still be in the Senate for the next two years.
Kyl believes that there are other things in life that need his attention. He admitted that he never wanted to stay in office for as long as he did and doesn’t see why others should stay there that long.
