WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner released on Monday a statement welcoming the implementation of United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 1929, which applies sanctions on Iran, by the European Union (EU) and Canada.

The measures impose additional sanctions against Iran’s financial, insurance, transportation, trade, and energy sectors as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. The set of measures intends to isolate Iran.

Iran’s ability to use its transportation infrastructure and energy proceeds to support its nuclear and missile programs. It will also prohibit Iran from accessing Canadian and European banking systems to protect it from abuses by the Islamic country.

“We have already begun to see the impact of these sanctions, as companies around the world refuse to do business with Iran rather than risk becoming involved in Iran’s nuclear program and other illicit activities,” the statement read.

Clinton and Geithner said that the U.S. will continue to work with the EU and Canada to put more pressure on Iran in order to ensure that the approved sanctions are enforced. The U.S. has expressed its desire to reach a diplomatic solution with Iran regarding its nuclear program.

“We once again urge Iran’s leaders to pursue a path of cooperation and responsibility rather than confrontation and further isolation.”
