Scrap legislators’ development funds: Jharkhand lawmakers

Bharatiya Janata Party Ranchi, March 8 (IANS) Criticising the problems and delays in release of legislators’ local area development funds, a majority of Jharkhand legislators Tuesday demanded that the measure be scrapped if it could not be managed effectively.

“It is better to scrap the fund if it is not implemented effectively. We have to face people in the constituency who have high hopes of development works,” said Pradeep Yadava of the opposition Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P).

Even members of the ruling alliance supported the demand. “It is better to scrap the fund and the chief minister should announce scrapping of the fund in the state assembly,” said former deputy chief minister Raghubar Das of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) also spoke in favour of scrapping the provision.

“We recommend development work from our development fund, but the funds are not released on time. We assure people for development based on the recommendations and if the recommendations are not implemented, then we cut a sorry figure among people. It is better to scrap the fund,” said Lobin Hembrom of the JMM.

Some legislators, however, opposed scrapping of the fund and demanded effective implementation.

“Scrapping the fund is not a solution. The officials should be directed to implement the (legislators’) recommendations effectively,” said Phoolchand Mandala of the JVM-P.

In Jharkhand, each legislator gets Rs.3 crore every year under Local Area Development fund.
