Russia sends aid for Libyan refugees
March 6th, 2011 - 2:12 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, March 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A Russian plane carrying humanitarian aid for Libyan refugees arrived Sunday in Tunisia en route to the North African country, Russia’s emergencies ministry said.
“An Il-76 plane landed at the airport in Djerba (Tunisia). It delivered food supplies, including baby food, and tents for Libyan refugees in Tunisia,” the ministry’s spokesman said.
Opponents of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have revolted against his 41-year rule. Over 2,000 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and pro-Gaddafi forces that began in the North African country Feb 14.
Over 100,000 people have fled the country and crossed the Libyan-Tunisian border since Feb 20, according to the Red Cross.
The UN has accused Gaddafi of violation of human rights and suspended Libya from its Human Rights Council.
