Rs.42 crore seized in poll-bound states
January 23rd, 2012 - 10:07 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS) Officials Monday seized Rs.82 lakh at various places, taking the total cash confiscated in the states going to the polls to Rs.42.78 crore, Election Commission sources said.
Monday’s seizures included Rs.5 lakh from Uttar Pradesh, Rs.70 lakh from Punjab and Rs.7 lakh from Uttarakhand. Officials said this indicated that black money was being circulated in a bid to woo voters.
The sources said till date Rs.42.78 crore had been seized since campaigning began, with a major share of Rs.29.65 crore in Uttar Pradesh alone.
Punjab’s contribution is Rs.12.11 crore and Uttarakhand’s Rs.55 lakh. Another Rs.47 lakh has been seized in Manipur so far.
Staggered elections will take place in February-March in Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Goa.
