Rs.10 million in cash seized from cars
March 14th, 2011 - 10:44 pm ICT by IANSChennai, March 14 (IANS) Ahead of assembly elections next month, the Tamil Nadu Police and the income tax department have seized more than Rs.10 million (Rs.1 crore) cash from cars across the state.
A total of Rs.9.9 million was seized from one car in Kanyakumari district.
Unaccounted cash totalling Rs.1.45 million were found elsewhere in other cars.
With elections to the Tamil Nadu assembly announced, anyone carrying more than Rs.200,000 in cash has to have proper documents to show ownership, failing which the money will be seized.
The income tax department has formed around 70 teams to monitor movement of hard cash.
Amid fears that cash will be used to buy votes, the Election Commission has mountrf a strict vigil.
The ruling DMK has meanwhile urged Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi not to seize cash from small businessmen, saying they will be put into hardship.
