New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) The Supreme Court Tuesday asked the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court to place before an appropriate bench Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s plea seeking a CBI probe into the 2009 attack on her Lucknow house by suspected Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers.
An apex court bench of Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice J.S. Khehar directed the high court chief justice after it was told that the matter was pending before the high court for the last two years.
Appearing for the Congress leader, senior counsel S.C. Maheshwari told the court that since there were direct allegations against Chief Minister Mayawati of the BSP and the state police chief, the state advocate general was taking adjournment after adjournment and prolonging the matter for the last two years.
“This matter will not be taken up. It has come up 20 times. Every time I was present. Let it be heard by the court which has the jurisdiction,” said Maheshwari, assisted by Sandhya Goswami.
As Maheshwari sought the intervention of the apex court, Justice Ganguly said: “We can’t decide the roster of the high court.”
The Congress leader invited the ire of suspected BSP workers for allegedly making a derogatory statement attacking Mayawati after her government gave a paltry compensation to rape victims belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Her petition said that July 16, 2009 her house located at Sarojini Naidu Nagar neighbourhood in Lucknow was attacked and looted by assailants.
She blamed BSP workers and a legislator from the ruling party for the arson attack, looting, criminal intimidation and burning of her house.
