Rights panel seeks report on fund misuse in Uttar Pradesh
July 13th, 2011 - 10:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 13 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government seeking a report over allegations of officials in Bundelkhand area misusing funds meant for families of debt-ridden farmers who had committed suicide.
“The NHRC has seen a media report and a complaint based thereon alleging that corrupt officials in Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh are feeding off aid for the dead farmers whose families are still struggling to get the compensation under several schemes of the government,” a statement said.
“The commission has issued notice to the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh calling for a report within four weeks,” it added.
A TV news channel reported that officials in Bundelkhand were allegedly demanding bribes from the families of farmers, who committed suicide under debt, to pay compensation.
