Kolkata, April 18 (IANS) A report has been sent to the Election Commission in New Delhi regarding two police officers here found guilty of tampering documents, a senior election official said Monday.

“We have received a report on the alleged tampering of documents by the officer-in-charge and a sub-inspector of Shyampukur police station. The two cops were found guilty and they have been suspended and a departmental enquiry has been initiated against them,” West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sunil Kumar Gupta said.

“Today (Monday) we have sent the report with recommendation to the Election Commission clearly stating that disciplinary action should be taken against them. We have not yet received a formal reply from them. As soon as we receive that, we will act accordingly,” he said.

On the night of April 15, Sashi Panja, the Trinamool Congress candidate from Shyampukur constituency, lodged a first information report (FIR) with the Shyampukur police station alleging that a group of four Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists attacked her and her party colleagues when they were campaigning in their constituency.

The names of the four accused were clearly mentioned in the FIR, but later, Shyamal Sarkar and sub-inspector Shibaditya Pal tampered with the FIR and erased their names.
