Rep. Jerry McNerney: Only Bay Area House Member To Vote In Favor Of Extension Of Patriot Act

Jerry McNerney was the sole member who has voted in favor of the bill for the extension of the Patriot Act, something which the White House wants to attain. All other Bay Area members including Reps. Lynn Woolsey, George Miller, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Lee, John Garamendi, Pete Stark, Anna Eshoo, Mike Honda, Zoe Lofgren and Sam Farr had voted against the passing of the bill.

While majority Bay Area local Reps. on Tuesday voted against the passing of the bill, two Bay Area members Reps. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough did not vote. Rep. Jerry McNerney was out of those 67 Democrats who voted in favor of the bill, asserting that he has full support for extending the powers of the Patriot Act which will be getting expired on February 28. According to sources, Rep. Jerry McNerney’s spokesperson Sarah Hersh told the media that Rep. Jerry McNerney is seriously concerned about the security issues of the nation which is why he believes that necessary changes should be made in the legal system of the country to fight terrorism.

The White House had proposed for the extension of the powers of the Patriot Act but was denied after the bill got rejected at the U.S. House of Representatives owing to secure a majority. The bill was dismissed since it was falling short by seven votes for obtaining a majority, which according to U.S. House of Representatives rule should be of a two-third of the majority. Rep. It was a 277-148 ratio, where 122 out of the 148 opposers were Democrats. 26 Republics went against it, with eight of them newly inducted members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
