January 14th, 2011 - 8:23 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Jan 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords gave doctors and loved ones beside her hospital bed something to cheer about.
For the first time, Giffords was able to communicate with her family. Earlier on, doctors reported that she had opened her eyes. Doctors said that was a major milestone in her treatment.
Giffords was shot in the head almost a week back in an attack, in which the police believe that she was the prime target. Though she was shot in the head at close range, she managed to survive and her response to treatment has been encouraging for doctors. The attack left six people dead and thirteen others including the congresswoman injured.
Doctors announced on Thursday that her family was allowed to speak to the congresswoman and she responded with her some hand movement. The doctors said that the family asked specific questions and she was able to communicate with her arms.
Giffords is currently at the Tucson’s University Medical Center where a series of surgeries have been performed on her. Doctors are positive that she may pull through though she is currently still in critical condition. They believe that because of her ability to communicate, she still boasts of cognitive functioning.
