WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-New York, was found guilty on multiple counts of ethics violations, after a two-year investigation by the House ethics committee into his personal finances.

A special eight-member panel found that there was “clear and convincing evidence” that Rep. Rangel, 80, had violated House ethics on 11 of the 13 charges.

“We have tried to act with fairness led only by the facts and the law, and I believe that we have accomplished that mission,” said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D., California, the chairwoman of the Ethics committee.

On Monday, Rangel walked out of the House ethics subcommittee trial, complaining he has not had sufficient time to hire a new legal team, and accused the panel to rush to complete its work before the conclusion of the current lame-duck Congress.

Rangel was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1970. He was forced to step down this past March as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee because of the accusations against him.

Rangel was formally charged in July, and after resisting calls to leave Congress, won re-election this month.
