Renuka says arson attack on home doesn’t scare her (Lead, changing dateline)
December 2nd, 2009 - 2:57 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi/Hyderabad, Dec 2 (IANS) Congress leader Renuka Chowdhry Wednesday said she wasn’t intimidated by Telangana Rashta Samiti (TRS) activists who attacked her office-cum-residence in Khammam in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking in New Delhi, the former union minister said: “They attacked my house thinking they would be able to intimidate me. But they don’t know I don’t get intimidated by all these things.”
Chowdhry said she did not want her supporters to retaliate.
“I belong to Telangana, I am a public representative of Telangana and I remain committed to the region… I request all my well-wishers not to retaliate and maintain peace. I don’t want this issue to go further,” she said.
Early Wednesday, TRS activists set ablaze Chowdhry’s office-cum-residence in Khammam town, about 200 km from Hyderabad. Acting swiftly, security personnel brought the fire under control.
The TRS wants a separate Telangana state. Chowdhry, former MP from Khammam, is opposed to this demand.
Police have recovered a letter written by TRS workers threatening to carry out more such attacks to protest the arrest of their party president K. Chandrasekhara Rao, who is popularly known as KCR.
Tension gripped Khammam as KCR continued his ‘fast unto death’ in a government-run hospital in Khammam demanding a separate Telangana.
KCR, who was arrested Sunday and sent to judicial custody for 14 days ahead of his ‘fast unto death’, launched the hunger strike in Khammam sub-jail. He was shifted to the hospital Monday.
