Mumbai, Feb 26 (IANS) Suspended Nationalist Congress Party legislator Dilip Wagh and his secretary Mahesh Mali, accused of raping a 22-year old woman, were apprehended late Saturday evening, an official said. The duo, nabbed by the Mumbai Police’s crime branch from Pali Hill in Bandra west, are expected to be handed over to Nashik police early Sunday, the official said.
An official from Nashik police said that Wagh and Mali are likely to be handed over to them Sunday for further action.
An embarrassed NCP Saturday suspended Wagh, elected from Pachora in Jalgaon district.
According to police, Wagh and Mali allegedly raped the woman in a government guest house (in Nashik) last Monday, Feb 21.
Wagh, son of a senior politician Omkar Wagh, a two-time legislator from the same constituency, was absconding since then, prompting his party to initiate the disciplinary proceedings against him.
This is the second major loss of face suffered by the NCP a year after its Osmanabad Member of Parliament Padamsinh Patil was arrested on murder charges and is currently on bail.
According to Nashik Police, Wagh and Mali are said to have lured the girl from Aurangabad to Nashik on the pretext of giving her a job.
When she reached Nashik last Monday, both raped her in the guest house where they were staying. The next day, the girl registered a police complaint.
With the Budget Session of the Legislature starting here next fortnight, the NCP moved into damage control mode by suspending Wagh.
After the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena slammed the Democratic Front Government of attempting to shield the legislator, Home Minister R. R. Patil said that police are probing the case and it would be done impartially.
