Rally in Moscow for fair presidential vote
January 9th, 2012 - 3:09 am ICT by IANSMoscow, Jan 9 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Around 100 people gathered in Moscow Sunday to call for fair presidential elections in March. The protesters turned out at the “Fed-up” rally in central Bolotnaya Square, the focus of ongoing protests against the disputed parliamentary vote in December.
Demonstrators have been calling for fresh polls over alleged voting fraud in favour of the ruling United Russia party.
Svetlana Peunova, one of the leaders of the outlawed Volya (Will) movement which organised Sunday’s rally, called for the presidential poll in March to be free and fair, and said last month’s protests were “paid for”.
She also announced her intention to run for the post.
Thousands of people rallied in Moscow and other cities in December to demand a re-run of the parliamentary vote, in the biggest show of anger at the authorities in years.
