Raja meets DMK supporters near court lock-up
February 7th, 2012 - 10:28 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 7 (IANS) Around 60 supporters and DMK party colleagues of jailed former communications minister A. Raja met him Tuesday in the premises of a Delhi district court complex where he is facing trial in the 2G case.
Raja’s supporters arrived early in the morning at the Patiala House court complex in central Delhi and waited outside the court lock-up to meet the MP from the Nilgiris.
They greeted Raja when he came out of the lock-up to go towards a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court which is hearing the 2G case.
According to a close associate of Raja, the DMK supporters had come to brief the MP on the local body elections in Tamil Nadu last October.
Swami Nathan, a DMK member, said that despite being in jail, Raja was ensuring the welfare of people of his constituency. The former minister is in jail since last February.
According to the government auditor, the 2G scam pertained to a biased distribution of mobile phone airwaves and operating licences, in lieu of kickbacks, to telecom firms that could have cost the treasury up to Rs.1.76 lakh crore in lost revenue.
Nineteen individuals and six companies are accused in the case. Except for Raja and another accused, all other arrested individuals have been released on bail.
