New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) Actor and Lok Sabha MP Raj Babbar Thursday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and assured his support for the Congress-led government and the India-US nuclear deal. Denying reports that he was joining Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Raj Babbar, who has quit the Samajwadi Party on whose ticket he won elections from Agra in 2004, said he “would not fight elections under the symbol of BSP”.
“I met the Congress president and assured her my support in favour of the government and the nuclear deal. I believe in Congress policies,” he told reporters in front of Gandhi’s residence.
Raj Babbar was suspended by the Samajwadi Party in February 2006 for indulging in “anti-party activities”.
He denied striking any deal with the Congress. “I am not a wheeler-dealer. I am not so strong. I am a very weak person. The people of Agra have sent me to parliament. I don’t come under pressure. Nor do I get tempted.
“The nuclear deal is in favour of the nation and I support it. I have not struck any deal,” he said.
