Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS) Railway recruitment examinations will now be conducted in all major Indian languages, including Urdu, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said here Sunday.
Speaking to newspersons at an iftar party hosted by union Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed, Banerjee said: “Those appearing at Railway Recruitment Board examinations can opt for any regional language, including Urdu.”
RRB examinations have so far been conducted only in English and Hindi.
Banerjee’s announcement is being seen as a strategy to woo her electorate in West Bengal where Bengalis form the linguistic majority. The inclusion of Urdu could also go down well with the 25 percent Muslim electorate in the state.
She said a new train between Sealdah and Ajmer Sharif would be flagged off Sep 12.
Banerjee also promised a railway job for Bengal girl Rashmi Sharma, who swam the English Channel for the third time last month.
