Kolkata, April 14 (IANS) Raids are on in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district to arrest Trinamool Congress candidate Subhranshu Roy, the son of union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy, for allegedly assaulting poll officials, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sunil Gupta said Thursday.

Gupta said: “I have spoken with the district election officer (district magistrate) this (Thursday) morning to enquire about the step taken by them to arrest the accused candidate. He has informed me that raids are being conducted and efforts are being made to arrest the candidate Subhranshu Roy, but they are yet to arrest him.”

A team of EC officials was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress supporters in Boldeghata area of Bijpur assembly constituency Tuesday. The mob was instigated by Trinamool candidate Subhranshu Roy, the son of party MP and Minister of State Mukul Roy.

Gupta said so far 12 people have been arrested, including one accused, and the officer in-charge of the police station Partha Pritam Roy was suspended for not arresting the accused who was present in the police station even after the crime.

Asked why the district administration is failing to arrest Subhranshu despite being seen attending party rallies and campaign programmes, Gupta said: “I have no information regarding this and the district administration has assured to take all efforts to arrest the accused.”

He, however, said he had no idea about the charges levelled against the candidate. “The complaint was lodged by the poll officials and I don’t have a copy of the first information report (FIR) so I cannot comment whether he was charged under non-bailable section or not,” said the CEO.

Meanwhile, the CPI-M has demanded strict action and exemplary punishment against Subhranshu for assaulting poll officials.

Trinamool secretary-general and leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee said, “There are several instances of our party leaders and workers being framed in false cases during the Left Front regime. I can’t say what had happened in this case.”
