Rahul meets PM before Congress core group meeting

Rahul Gandhi New Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi held consultations with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh before the Congress core group met Friday evening, party sources said.

Though there were indications that Gandhi may attend the meeting of the core group - the party’s top leaders’ group - he did not do so, they added.

Rahul Gandhi had arrived at 7, Race Course Road, the official residence of Manmohan Singh, a little while before the core group meeting and held separate discussions with the prime minister, they added.

Party president Sonia Gandhi, who had chaired a party meeting Thursday for the first time after she underwent surgery abroad Aug 4, also did not attend the meeting.

Thursday’s meeting of the Congress election committee was attended by Rahul Gandhi. The one-hour meeting finalised candidates for several constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, due for polls next May, sources said.

The core group meeting, chaired by Manmohan Singh, was attended by other top leaders including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel.
