Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh), June 29 (IANS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi paid a surprise visit here Wednesday to meet the family of a girl who was allegedly raped and killed in a police station.
According to party officials, Gandhi was with the victim’s mother for around 20 minutes.
“Rahul Gandhi asked the victim’s mother for her feedback about the investigations being carried out by the police,” a Congress functionary said.
“He is also expected to question the local administration and police officers about the case,” he added.
The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree June 10 inside the Nighasan police station premises in this district.
Police initially dismissed the death as suicide, but a second autopsy confirmed that the girl was strangulated.
As many as 11 policemen and three doctors who conducted the first autopsy were suspended.
The victim’s family has been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case, alleging that the girl was raped.
At present, the criminal investigation department of the Uttar Pradesh Police is investigating the case.
