Rahul Gandhi on two-day Tamil Nadu visit

Rahul Gandhi Chennai, Dec 22 (IANS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi arrived here Wednesday on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu to enthuse more youth and women to join the party’s youth wing.He was accorded a warm reception by state Congress Chief K.V. Thankabalu and other leaders at the airport.

Gandhi thereafter meet the office bearers of the state Youth Congress and will later interact with intellectuals at a city hotel.

He will also visit Villupuram and Madurai to meet Youth Congress office bearers there.

On Thursday, Gandhi will meet Youth Congress office bearers of Tirunelvelli, Tirupur and Coimbatore districts. He will conclude his trip after meeting women and Youth Congress officials in Tiruchirapalli district.

According to Youth Congress officials, the MP from Amethi is expected to discuss strategies for the party’s growth as well as preparations for next year’s assembly elections.

The Youth Congress in Tamil Nadu is 1.4 million strong. Party officials told IANS that they are now focusing on increasing the membership base.

The tour comes in the backdrop of the probe into the 2G spectrum scam intensifying with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Dec 15 raiding a host of people associated with disgraced former communications minister A. Raja and an NGO linked to DMK MP Kanimozhi - Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s daughter.

Gandhi is not scheduled to meet DMK president and key Congress ally Karunanidhi.
