Question of PMK-DMK alliance doesn’t arise now: Karunanidhi
February 2nd, 2011 - 1:25 am ICT by IANS Chennai, Feb 1 (IANS) DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi Tuesday said the question of PMK being part of a DMK-led alliance to fight the ensuing assembly elections does not arise now.Karunanidhi’s remark came on his return from New Delhi.
Asked if PMK would be a part of the DMK alliance, Karunanidhi told reporters that the DMK had earlier said “they are part of our alliance” but they refuted it.
On Sunday Karunanidhi had categorically declared that the DMK front will comprise of VCK, PMK, Puratchi Bharatham and the Muslim League, besides the Congress.
But on the same day, PMK founder S.Ramadoss said his party had not yet firmed up the alliance with DMK and that the decision would be taken at the party’s general council meeting.
According to Karunanidhi, he presumed the DMK would be part of the alliance based on various communications from the PMK.
A senior PMK leader told IANS on condition of anonymity: “Every party has its own procedures. The alliance issue will have to be deliberated and decided by our party forum. This is what our leader meant that day.”
He said PMK has its own vote bank and is strong in 100 constituencies in the state, adding that the AIADMK was wooing the PMK into its fold.
Expressing satisfaction about his Delhi visit, Karunanidhi said the DMK and Congress would form committees to discuss sharing of seats for the elections and other alliance matters.
He said the issue of Indian fishermen being attacked by Sri Lankan Navy was discussed at the Chief Minister’s Conference on Internal Security Tuesday and also with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
